Project by La Fawnda Watson from Monrovia, Calif.

La Fawnda considers her 5-year-old daughter the inspiration for making her bold and colorful mixed-media urban clay masks. In fact, her little one is the very reason this mother of two started working with clay. One day she was helping her daughter clean up one of her art projects and found herself "playing" with some scraps of clay...the rest is history!

Materials:

plastic tray
wax paper
clay slip
underglaze
newspaper
paint brushes
glue
marker
buttons, glass, beads or shells
wire
water
sponge
acrylic paint

Steps:

1. Layer a plastic tray with wax paper. Pour the slip on top of the wax paper in plastic tray. Let dry.

2. Once dry, take out of plastic tray and remove wax paper.

3. Whip lightly with wet sponge.

4. Make two holes at the top of mask.

5. Lay out newspaper.

6. Paint one side with underglaze and let dry.

7. Fire in kiln and let cool. Remove from kiln.

8. Paint the other side of the mask with acrylic paint.

9. Draw a line down the middle of the two colors.

10. Add found objects for eyes and mouth with glue.

11. Add wire to the holes at the top of the mask and add beads.
