Figure G
Project designed by Emi Fukushima.

Materials:

one block of black FimoSoft polymer clay
pasta maker or acrylic rod rolling pin
NuBlade Kato clay tool
large needle tool
rubber stamps
acrylic paint - white, blue, green, brown, gold
wet/dry sand paper - 400, 600, 800 grit
buffer
cording
charms and coins
glue

Steps:

1. Condition the clay by softening it in hands (figure A) and rolling it with a rolling pin, or put it through a pasta machine 20 to 30 times.

2. Flatten the clay to about 1/16 inch or to the lowest setting on the pasta machine. Fold it in half to double the thickness.

3. Place a rubber stamp on one side of the clay to create the front design for the pendant (figure B). Place another rubber stamp of the same pattern on the opposite side of the clay to create the back design for the pendant. Press together (figure C) then lift off the clay to reveal the pendant designs (figure D).

4. Make a snake with black clay by wrapping the clay around a large needle tool (figure E). Bake the snake and the pendant in an oven at 265 degrees for 20 minutes. After the clay is cool, cut it to the desired size to make a tube covering for the pendant cord. Attach it to the pendant with glue (figure F).

5. Paint cooled clay with white acrylic paint. Let dry and rub off excess paint with a paper towel or rag (figure G). Lightly apply blue, green, brown and gold paint to get the desired patina effect. Rub off excess paint with a rag and water. Let dry.

6. Sand the pendant with wet/dry sandpaper, first with 400 grit, then the 600 grit and finally with 800 grit.

7. Buff the pendant with a buffer.

8. Embellish the pendant with charms or coins.

9. Put a piece of cord through the clay tube.
