syndee holt* from Polyform Products demonstrates how to make a unique, colorful vase by covering an ordinary vase with clay and geometrical-clay cutouts
(see photo at right).
Materials:
polymer clay (Sculpey Premo brand was used on the show, in black and a variety of other colors.)
clay blade
clay-dedicated pasta machine
texture sheets
cookie cutters
glass vase (Clay sticks to glass very well.)
Steps:
- For the rainbow blend, lay intersecting triangles of clay in a line. Split the line down the middle and fold to create a rectangle. Fold the blend in half from top to bottom.
- Run clay through the pasta machine (do not use for food after using for clay), folded portion first. Keep folding in the same direction and running through the machine.
- Set the pasta machine on a thinner setting and carefully run the clay through the machine with the strips going vertically. Make it thinner, but don't spread the colors.
- Cover the vase with a thin layer of black clay (figure A). Blend the joints where the clay meets by pressing a section of the texture sheets randomly over the surface (figure B).
- Lay a colored clay sheet over a sheet of black clay (figure C) and cut out shapes with cookie cutters. Layering the colored clay over the black adds dimension and gives colored pieces the illusion of "floating" on the black surface of the vase.
- Lay the shape face down on a texture sheet and press lightly. The texture adds some complexity to the design as well as disguising blemishes (like fingerprints ) in the clay.
- Apply clay to the vase and start building your design (figure D).
- When finished, bake the vase according to package directions and allow it to cool in the oven before removing.
