Plaster-Cast Objects

Making attractive plaster-cast decorative items at home is a fun and easy project. Supplies for plaster casts are available at most large craft stores. Follow the mixing directions on the box, and be careful not to breathe in the plaster dust. Pour the first batch of plaster into a plastic container and press the design into the plaster to create a mold. When it hardens, pour another batch of plaster into the container to create the actual cast. If the plaster item is going to be used as a wall hanging, insert a stout hook into the plaster once it begins to harden.

Materials:

mold mix (available at art-supply and craft stores)
whisk
flat plastic dish for casting (Make sure this container is at least 2 inches bigger than the item to be cast.)
plastic spatula to remove plaster from whisk
seashells or any other items of choice
heavy wire
tile nippers
sandpaper
wood rasp

Steps:

1. Follow the mold-mix directions and add the correct amount of water. Stir with a whisk to create the plaster-casting material.
   
   
2. Remove from whisk with plastic spatula.
   
   
3. Spread the mix into a plastic container.
   
   
4. Press the shell or item to be cast into the mix.
   
   
5. When it dries, remove the shell, leaving the mold of the shell.
   
   
6. Mix another batch of the casting material, again following the package directions.
   
   
7. Pour into shell mold.
   
   
8. When the plaster begins to set up, insert a heavy wire hook for wall hanging. Let dry and remove casting.
   
   
9. Sand lumpy areas if necessary.
   
   
10. If you need to trim off some of the edge, use tile nippers and sandpaper. A wood rasp would also work to smooth the edges.
