Host Kathi Cardinalli demonstrates an easy technique for making castings of household items such as seashells.
Materials:
mold mix (available at art-supply and craft stores)
whisk
flat plastic dish for casting (Make sure this container is at least 2 inches bigger than the item to be cast.)
plastic spatula to remove plaster from whisk
seashells or any other items of choice
heavy wire
tile nippers
sandpaper
wood rasp
Steps:
- Follow the mold-mix directions and add the correct amount of water. Stir with a whisk to create the plaster-casting material.
- Remove from whisk with plastic spatula.
- Spread the mix into a plastic container.
- Press the shell or item to be cast into the mix.
- When it dries, remove the shell, leaving the mold of the shell.
- Mix another batch of the casting material, again following the package directions.
- Pour into shell mold.
- When the plaster begins to set up, insert a heavy wire hook for wall hanging. Let dry and remove casting.
- Sand lumpy areas if necessary.
- If you need to trim off some of the edge, use tile nippers and sandpaper. A wood rasp would also work to smooth the edges.
