Figure D
Host Kathi Cardinalli demonstrates how to embellish simple serving pieces with colorful polymer clay (see photo at immediate right).

Materials:

pasta maker
stainless-steel serving pieces
polymer clay
millefiori (available at art stores, or make your own using the pasta maker to roll the clay)

Steps:

  1. Use a pasta maker to roll out the clay (figure A). Do not use this for making pasta after using it for clay projects.

  2. Wrap clay around the handle of serving pieces (figure B).

  3. Cut slices of millefiori as desired to decorate the handles (figure C).

  4. Apply millefiori designs to the handle of the serving pieces (figure D).

  5. When finished applying designs to handles, bake for 10 to 20 minutes at 275 degrees to harden the clay.

* Note: Do not eat directly from objects made with clay. Clay can be used for handles, surface decorations, etc., but not for the utensil itself or for the inside of a bowl or plate.

Tips

  • The more you work the clay, the more pliable it gets.

  • Use a very sharp knife or cutting blade to cut clay, such as the Craftsman Handi-Cut blade or American Safety Razor Company brand scraper blades.
