Project designed by Maureen Carlson.
Materials:
FIMO Classic polymer clay - white and other colors of choice
Mix Quick kneading medium - one package for each six packages of clay
Sobo Premium craft and fabric glue
Super glue
1-3/4-inch long screw with a round or truss head
two 1/4-inch split lock washers
plain washer to fit screw
four nuts
pasta machine, roller or brayer
clay cutters and/or aspic cutters
paring knife
Nublade Kato clay blade
large clay tile or baking sheet
fiberfill
oven
oven thermometer and timer
Steps:
1. Choose colors of polymer clay as desired. Mix and condition the clay, adding Mix Quick kneading medium as needed for softness (figure A).
2. Place a split lock washer onto the screw so that it rests against the head of the screw. Place one nut onto the screw, tightening it firmly against the first split lock washer. Glue in place. Determine how tall the knob should be and alternate nuts and split lock washers to reach that heigth. Tighten and glue in place (figure B).
5. Cover the knob with clay to form a basic shape, making it smaller than the desired end knob size (figure C).
6. Bake the clay knob according to the directions on the package. Let cool.
7. Coat the baked knob with a layer of white glue. Let dry.
8. Embellish the knob by creating clay designs such as Skinner blend leaves and flowers (figures D and E), checkerboard and nine-patch patterns and applique designs cut with clay cutters or aspic cutters.
9. Bake the knob according to the directions on the package, placing it on a layer of fiberfill to prevent the bottom sides from getting flat.
10. Screw the knob in place onto a cupboard or door.
