Figure E
Project designed by Mischelle Smith.

Materials:

paper clay
rolling pin
plastic wrap
craft knife
emery board
toothpick
cutting mat
acrylic paints
maple gel wood stain
assorted paintbrushes
clear acrylic sealer
embroidery floss
jute cording
wind chimes
The Angel Company country flag stamp - #358UN

Steps:

1. Tear off a chunk of clay and roll it into a ball.

2. Place a piece of plastic wrap onto the work surface. Flatten the ball of clay out with a rolling pin to about 1/8-inch thick.

3. Stamp the country flag stamp into the clay and lift it out.

4. Place the plastic wrap and clay onto the cutting mat.

5. Cut the country stamp image out with a craft knife, leaving a small border around the image (figure A).

6. Using a toothpick, poke holes through the bottom of the clay image, one for each chime (figure B). Poke one toothpick hole at the top of the clay.

7. Place the clay face down on a baking sheet and bake it at 250 degrees, turning it every 10 minutes.

8. After your country flag is dry, sand the edges and the back of the flag where the holes were poked. Sand until smooth.

9. Paint the flag image as desired, avoiding crevices and holes (figure C). Let dry.

10. Brush wood stain get onto the painted clay image (figure D). Using a soft rag, very gently begin wiping away the excess. Let dry.

11. Spray the clay with clear acrylic sealer. Let dry.

12. Attach the wind chimes through the toothpick holes using jute cord (figure E). String a hanger through the top of the flag to hang it.

Tips:

  • The color of wood stain gel will greatly affect the outcome of the piece. Experiment with various colors.
  • To avoid sanding after the piece is baked, smooth the unbaked piece with a wet finger.
