syndee holt* from Polyform Products provides tips for creating architectural borders on round surfaces with clay.
Copper Bucket Border
Materials:
copper bucket
Sculpey Flexible Mold, Etruscan design (or other architectural mold of choice)
two 2-oz. pkgs. black Premo Sculpey clay
Antique Copper PearlEx powdered pigment
gap-filling medium speed instant glue
Sculpey clay blade
Steps:
- Make strips of layered #1 and #3 sheets of black clay and cut them to fit into the mold.
- Press into the mold (figure A) until the design appears on the clay (figure B). You may need to turn the mold upside down and press on the clay from the bottom.
- Use your finger to apply the PearlEx to the black clay strip (figure C).
- Bake, according to the directions on the mold package. Cool until just warm and pliable.
- Glue into place on the bucket with gap-filling, medium-speed instant glue (figure D).
- Continue the first five steps with remaining strips of clay until the diameter of the bucket is covered.
- If any gaps occur in the border that you've glued on, just bake some excess scraps of the clay and cut off small strips of it to fill in those gaps (figure E).
Wine Coaster Border
Materials:
kitchen cutter to fit around wine bottle
three 2-oz. pkgs. black Premo Sculpey clay
Sculpey clay blade
clay-dedicated pasta machine (or another item to make the clay flat)
Antique Copper PearlEx powdered pigment
liquid clay
Steps:
- Be sure the kitchen cutter you use fits around a standard-size wine bottle.
- Cut a #1 sheet of clay that is 12 inches long and 1/4 inch thick to fit around the kitchen cutter. Flatten with a pasta machine or other item.
- Trim the edges at an angle, then wrap around the round form and rub the angled edges together (figure F).
- Smear Antique Copper PearlEx onto the clay with your finger.
- Make strips of layered #1 and #3 sheets of black clay to fit into the mold. Press into the mold to create the design, as in the bucket project above.
- Squirt liquid clay onto the back of the clay, then press into the kitchen cutter (figure G). Brush Antique Copper PearlEx onto the design with your finger to highlight texture.
- Bake, cool, then remove from form.
- Place on top of a large flattened piece of the black clay, then use the clay blade to cut around the diameter (figure H). This will be the bottom of the coaster.
- Squirt a ring of liquid clay around the inside perimeter to create a waterproof seal.
