syndee holt* from Polyform Products' The Sculpey People, demonstrates how to create a beautiful vase or decorative jar for the home by covering the glass with flexible polymer-clay sheets.
Materials:
one to three 2-oz. pkgs. Sculpey Premo black clay, depending on the size of the glass jar that is to be covered
glass jar
basic clay supplies, such as a Sculpey clay blade (or other blade), clay-dedicated pasta machine or a roller or drinking glass to make clay flat Jacquard Pearl-Ex powders in a combination of colors (good choices are Super Copper, Antique Bronze, Gold, or perhaps Spring Green, Misty Lavender, Turquoise and Flamingo Pink)
Translucent Liquid Sculpey for adhesive purposes
round cutter for top (an empty washed vegetable can could work as an alternative to a cutter)
Steps:
- Make a sheet of clay approximately 1/8-inch thick and place the glass jar, top-side down, on it.
- Press the glass into the clay slightly to emboss the edge of the lid.
- Remove the glass and use a craft blade to trim the circular piece of clay left by the edge. Trim on the inside of the mark so that the clay will be smaller than the edge of the glass top.
- Set this circular piece of clay on another piece of clay, and use the circle cutter to cut another larger circle of clay for the top. Now the smaller circle of clay will become the inside of the lid and will hold the lid on the jar.
- Cover the outside of the glass jar with the remaining clay.
- Use your finger to smooth out the seams.
- Put metallic powder on the top in a random, freeform fashion.
- Stand up three coils in a tripod pattern, so that they support each other.
- Use Liquid Sculpey to bond the polymer coils to the polymer top.
- Create a bi-cone by rubbing a small ball of clay with a plastic bottle cap.
- Add texture with coarse sandpaper.
- Bake according to instructions on clay packaging.
