Folk Art Face Jug

Shelby West sculpts a whimsical folk art face jug using local Georgia clay.

Steps 1-4
1. Mix the two clays (brown and white) together in a clay mill. Note: Shelby made his clay mill from a tiller and an old fertilizer spreader.

2. Cut off about 8 lbs. of clay to make a 1-gallon size face jug from the mixed clay using a clay cutting wire.

3. Wedge the clay by kneading it on a work surface with your hands to get rid of any air pockets that could cause the jug to blow up during the firing process.

4. Place the clay ball in the center of the potter's wheel. Center it and begin to open up the ball with your hands. Use a ball opener to gauge the thickness of the bottom and to open the ball the to the desired width.
