From the Shoebox today came a lovely letter from viewer Paula Fullilove of Toledo, Ohio. Paula also sent a photograph of some dolls she had made after having been inspired by a guest who had appeared on the show some time ago. After taking one look at the photograph, I was sure that the guest who had inspired Paula was Angela Briggs from episode 426, who makes African wrapped dolls from odds and ends of fabric. Paula had apparently missed the "wrapped" part but her dolls had much the same look and feel of those Angela had demonstrated.
I called Paula to get some more details, and as a result, Paula sent several of the dolls to be shown on the program. Paula explained that she first puts some of the plastic pellets in the empty soda pop or water bottles that she uses as a foundation to weigh them down a bit, then places the bottle on a large piece of fabric, pulls it up and around the bottle and the doll begins to take shape. She adds stuffed arms made of felt and an interesting headpiece with a variety of embellishments . . . feathers, buttons, bits and pieces of jewelry, etc. The dolls are all different and all attractive. Paula also told me that for the first time she was going to try selling them at a craft fair. We wish her well.
