Interior designer Catherine Bailly Dunne shows how to turn scraps of ribbon into works of art.
Personalized Blotter
Materials:
blotter or desk calendar
ribbon scraps
glue gun
Steps:
- Match room decor by adding borders with hot glue. Run hot glue along the length of the ribbon.
- Attach ribbon and fold over onto the back (figure A). Trim the ends if necessary.
Pencil Basket
Materials:
5 pieces of small, identically-shaped cardboard
wrapping paper
ribbon scraps
glue gun
hole punch
tape
Steps:
- Cut five square-shaped, identical pieces of cardboard.
- Wrap each piece with wrapping paper and use hot glue to secure the paper.
- Use tape to attach four pieces of cardboard to a fifth piece in the center.
- Use the hole punch to place holes in the top corner of each piece of cardboard that radiates out from the center.
- Run ribbon through two opposite holes of adjacent squares (figure B) and tie into a bow. Follow these steps to create a box shape that can hold pencils or other odds-and-ends.
Decorative Cake Flags
Materials:
toothpicks
double-sided tape
ribbon scraps
scissors
Steps:
- Cut ribbon two to three inches in length for each flag you want to make. When cutting the ribbon, fold it in half and cut at a 45-degree angle. This will create the fishtail effect at the end of each flag.
- Place double-sided tape on the short, flat end of the ribbon and roll a toothpick onto this edge. The flag is now ready to help decorate a cake.
