Faux Mosaic Fabric

Our Place : Episode OPL-406 -- More Projects »
PHOTO
Host Renai Ellison creates a mosaic look using fabric paint. Here's how.

Materials:

Euro-sized pillowcase made of natural fibers
acrylic fabric paint
craft knife
pencil and air-soluble fabric marker
image or create your own
Speedy Cut block printing medium – available in craft stores

Steps:

  1. Wash, dry and iron the pillowcase—ironing is important; you want to start with a wrinkle-free piece of fabric. Cut a piece of cardboard to the size of the pillowcase, and insert it between the front and the back of the case.

Figure A
  • Using a craft knife, cut geometrically shaped block designs from the Speedy Cut block printing medium to create rubber stamps (figure A).

  • Draw designs on the pillow case with a pencil, and then darken lines with an air-soluble fabric marker. The lines left by the marker should disappear in a matter of hours.

    Figure B
  • Using geometric shapes cut in step 2, stamp in the design areas with different colors of acrylic paints to create a mosaic. Use a sponge brush to apply the acrylic paint to the stamp, then stamp shapes in a random pattern to avoid a contrived look (figure B). The amount of paint transferred from the stamp to the pillowcase can vary to enhance the mosaic effect.

    Figure C
Stamp with the larger stamps first, then fill in with smaller stamps to accomplish a mosaic look. Once the design is stamped, fill in any larger white spots by stamping with more small shapes (figure C).

  • Let pillow case dry then stuff in a pillow for instant style in your home decor.
