Project by Debra Johnson from Grapevine, Texas.

According to Debra, before she discovered the world of ceramics, she "couldn't paint a lick!" You'd never know it by looking at her wild and whimsical creations. Debra's love of painting, ceramics and cake are combined in this hand-painted ceramic cake plate with beaded edges.

Materials:

pre-poured cake plate purchased in green ware – fired to bisque
sharp ceramic cleaning tools
sponge
pencil
Gare "Fun Stroke" ceramic paint
Gare "Bumpy Doodle' paint
brushes
water jar
paper towels
Gare GG 1700 clear transparent brushing glaze
small gauge soft wire
wire cutter
assortment of beads
E-6000 glue

Steps:

1. Purchase green ware cake plate in two pieces from a ceramic shop. Clean the green ware with cleaning tools. Wet the green ware with sponge.

2. Place green ware in kiln to fire to bisque for 6 hours. Requires 24 hours to cool off and be removed from kiln.

3. Once out of kiln, prepare a paint station with pencil, water jar, paper towels and ceramic paints.

4. Draw design on bisque with pencil.

5. Paint with Fun Stroke ceramic paints. Paint on top of ceramic paint with Bumpy Doodle paint. Allow to dry.

6. Glaze both pieces twice with ceramic glaze.

7. Place in kiln to fire for 4 hours ('fast' fire). Leave for 24 hours.

8. Set up a beading station: wire, wire cutters, assortment of beads, E-6000 glue.

9. Cut wire about 3-1/2 inches long. Thread one small bead onto the wire. Pull the opposite end of the wire through the bead, pulling both ends together.

10. Thread all remaining beads onto the wire with both ends being placed through the bead.

11. Leave 1/2 inch of wire showing and thread through the hole on the cake plate. Start on the outside of the plate and thread to the inside/underside of the plate.

12. Tie off the wire. Continue this process around the entire rim of the cake plate.

13. Once top of plate is beaded, apply E-6000 glue to the top of the cake pedestal. Place the top of the cake plate on cake pedestal and allow to dry.
