Project designed by Sherrill Kahn.

Materials:

1/2-yard muslin cut into 6" x 6" squares
crayons
Impress Me unmounted rubber stamps
fabric paint
applicator tip paint
soft sponges
water container
sandpaper
paper towels
eye dropper

Steps:

  1. Place unmounted rubber stamps face up on piece of sandpaper.
  2. Lay piece of ironed, unwashed muslin over the unmounted stamps.
  3. Using the side of the crayon, rub very hard over the stamp making a waxy impression.
  4. Cover as much of the muslin with wax design as desired.
  5. Place the paint colors in three or four separate dishes or on separate places on a palette. Dilute the colors slightly with an eyedropper and water.
  6. Sponge the lightest colors toward the center of the crayon piece. Sponge the darker colors toward the edges.
  7. Let the piece dry, then heat-set with paper towels situated over and under the piece. Use the cotton setting and iron for a minute or more.
  8. Pin the ironed piece of wax and paint design muslin to the center of a T-shirt.
  9. Using a needle and coordinating thread color, sew the piece with seed beads to the T-shirt, skipping about 1/4" in between each bead. Leave as is, or embellish further with rubber stamping around the edge of the appliqued piece.
Tips:
  • Use the wax and paint design fabric piece in a greeting card instead of T-shirt applique. Glue the ironed fabric piece to a piece of folded cardstock using a glue stick. Leave as is or stamp around the edge of the piece.
  • To accent the fabric design, run a thick line of applicator tip paint across the top of the crayon rubbing.
  • Scrape paint over the crayon rubbing to seal the colors. This technique should allow the wax design to show through.
  • Leave the crayon rub design as is or stamp an image on top using acrylic paint. This piece can be glued to greeting cards, used for jewelry, sewn to clothing, etc.
