Project designed by Priscilla Hauser.

Materials:

red Corex - Corex is corrugated plastic board similar to cardboard
FolkArt artists pigments - Pure Orange, Medium Yellow
FolkArt acrylic paint - green
Flower Fun Sponges #50122 - three per package
Striped Roller Sponge #50134
household sponge
scissors
40-inch length of 1/4-inch elastic
brush basin or water container
old shirt or apron to protect clothing
tracing paper
colored duct tape or packing tape
palette or wax paper
paper towels or old clean rags
pencil
graphite paper
large wing pattern - draw your own

Steps:

  1. Trace the wing pattern onto the tracing paper then transfer drawing to red Corex.
  2. Cut out the wings, and tape them together using the colored tape (figure A ).
  3. Punch holes in the wings to attach elastic.
  4. Tie knots in the ends of the elastic to secure the wings.
  5. To paint the background, dampen the roller sponge, and squeeze out the excess water. Squeeze a line of pure orange paint, and roll the roller back and forth until it is completely covered on the raised surface.
  6. Roll the sponge up and down the wings to create the stripes. Allow the paint to dry.
  7. Repeat step 2, and roll the sponge once across the upper wings and once across the lower wings. Let the paint dry.
  8. To create the flowers, squeeze medium yellow onto the palette. Dampen the medium flower sponge. Remove the excess water from the sponge, and swirl the sponge in the medium yellow.
  9. Stamp the flowers randomly over the orange stripes (figure B). Let the paint dry.
  10. To create the leaves, cut a leaf shape from the household sponge. Dampen the sponge, and squeeze out the excess water.
  11. Squeeze green paint on the palette, and touch the sponge into it.
  12. Stamp leaves around the flowers. Let dry.
