Danita Pagel Thomas, co-author of the book The Ultimate Book of Kid Concoctions, demonstrates a few recipes for fun and educational craft projects for children.

Surprise Soaps

Materials:

1 cup of grated Ivory soap
1/4 cup warm water
food coloring
small rubber animals or toys

Steps:

1. Mix water, soap and food coloring together in a medium bowl. Stir the mixture until it begins to thicken.

2. Remove the mixture from the bowl and knead it until it is the consistency of very thick dough.

3. Roll the dough into the shape of a ball.

4. Make a hole in the center of the ball that is big enough for the small rubber toy to fit inside.

5. Fill the hole with the treasure then seal with some extra dough.

6. Allow Surprise Soaps to dry overnight before using.

Tornado in a Bottle

Materials:

16 oz. clear plastic soda
bottle with a cap
cool water
two drops clear liquid dish detergent
1 tsp. glitter - optional

Steps:

1. Fill the bottle with cold water.

2. Add the liquid dish detergent and glitter to the bottle.

3. Screw the cap on the bottle tightly.

4. Holding the bottle by the neck, turn it upside down. Quickly rotate your wrist several times in a clockwise motion. When you stop rotating, a mini-tornado will form inside the bottle.

Cool Crayons

Materials:

broken crayons
heavy paper cups assorted candy molds

Steps:

1. Remove all paper from around the crayons then sort them by color in the heavy paper cups.

2. Place one cup of crayons in the microwave at a time. Cook on high four to six minutes or until the crayons are completely melted.

3. Carefully pour the melted crayon wax into the candy molds.

4. Place the candy molds in the freezer for about 20 minutes so the wax will harden.

5. Pop the Cool Crayons out of the candy molds and they're ready to use.

Surprise Chalk

Materials:

1/3 cup quick-setting Plaster of Paris
1 tbs. tempera paint
3 Tbs. water duct tape toilet paper tube coins, small rubber animals or toy treasures

Steps:

1. Mix plaster, tempera paint and water together in a small bowl until blended.

2. Quickly spoon half of the mixture into a toilet paper tube that has been sealed at one end with duct tape.

3. Place the surprise treasure in the tube half full of the chalk mixture.

4. Spoon the remaining chalk mixture into the toilet paper tube.

5. Let the chalk dry for 30 to 45 minutes.

6. Carefully peel the toilet paper tube away from the stick of chalk.
