Red Heart Classic, Art. E.267 (3 1/2 oz. skein); a yarn made of 100% Monsanto Acrylic Fiber
7 (9-11) skeins #808 Windsor Blue
5 (6-9) skeins #917 Cardinal
5 (6-9) skeins #3 Off White
Straight knitting needles #9 and circular knitting needle #9 or size required to knit to gauge
Size: Directions are given for afghan size (6 X 8 squares, plus Border, measuring 56" X 72"). Changes for large afghan (6 X 10 squares, plus Border, measuring 56" X 88"); and twin bedspread (8 X 10 squares, plus Border, measuring 72" X 88") are given in parentheses.
Gauge: 4 sts = 1" (garter stitch).
Notes: Entire afghan is worked in garter stitch (knit every row); with garter stitch, two rows form one ridge. When starting any color, leave 10" end at beginning; when ending any color, cut yarn leaving 10" end. Use these lengths to sew Squares together.
Square: Make 48 (60-80).
First Triangle: With Off White, cast on 2 sts.
Row 1 and All Wrong-Side Rows: Knit.
Row 2 (Right Side): K 1, k in front and back of next st (1 st inc)-3 sts.
Row 4: K 1, k in front and back of next st (another st inc), k 2-4 sts.
Row 6: K1, inc 1, k 3-5 sts.
Row 8: K 1, inc 1, k across-1 st inc.
Row 9: Knit.
Continue to repeat Rows 8 and 9 until there are 16 sts on needle. At end of last row, cut White. Join Cardinal and continue to repeat Rows 8 and 9 until there are 24 sts on needle.
Dec Row (Right Side): K 2 tog, k across-1 st dec, 23 sts.
Next Row (Wrong Side): Knit.
Repeat last 2 row until 17 sts remain.
Next Row (Right Side): Join White and dec 1 st, k across.
Next Row (Wrong Side): Knit.
Repeat last 2 rows until 2 sts remain.
Next Row (Right Side): K 2 tog.
Second Triangle: Base Row: Right side of First Triangle facing, with piece turned to work across long angled edge, with Windsor Blue, pick up and k 16 sts evenly spaced along White section, pick up and k 15 sts evenly spaced across Cardinal section, pick up and k 16 sts evenly spaced across next White section-47 sts.
Row 1 and All Wrong-Side Rows: Knit.
Row 2 and All Right-Side Rows: K 2 tog, k to last 2 sts, k 2 tog. Repeat last 2 rows and, at same time, work until there are a total of 12 rows in Windsor Blue (6 ridges), then work 8 rows (4 ridges) Off White, 12 more rows Blue; continue in Cardinal until 3 sts remain.
Last Row (Right Side): Sl 1, k 2 tog, psso.
Assembly:
Large Blocks: Make 12 (15-20) Blocks. Using 4 Squares for each Block, with Cardinal triangle at center, sew Squares into a 2 X 2 unit-1 Large Block completed.
Afghan: Arrange and sew Large Blocks into a 3 X 4 (3 X 5 - 4 X 5) unit.
Border:
Base Row: (Note: Borders are worked on side at a time.) Right side of afghan facing, with circular needle, with Windsor Blue, pick up and k 30 sts along edge of each Square.
Row 1: Knit.
Row 2: K 1, inc 1, k to last st, inc 1, k 1.
Rows 3 through 33: Repeat Rows 1 and 2.
Row 34: Bind off all sts as to p. Work Border on remaining three sides the same. Sew corners together.
