Carol welcomes guest Vicki Garnas, who demonstrates how to stencil a vest made from an average vest pattern. She suggests using fabrics with themes that are represented in the patterns. She then selects a subject matter and chooses an appropriate corresponding stencil. Vicki recommends using books of iron-on transfers to elicit stencil ideas.
Materials:
vest pattern
freezer paper
cuticle scissors
iron
pen or pencil
permanent fabric markers
assorted scraps of cloth
material for lining
buttons
embroidery thread
Steps:
- Trace a stencil pattern onto freezer paper.
- Use cuticle scissors to cut out the pattern to make a stencil.
- Iron the stencil, wax-side-down, onto the fabric you have chosen to stencil. Use the cotton (hot) setting on the iron.
- Use a pen or pencil to trace the stencil onto the fabric.
- Remove the paper.
- Embellish the design with fabric markers.
- Repeat with as many designs as you like.
- As an added attraction, sew odd pieces of cloth around stenciled squares.
- Piece fabric stencils together until the "quilt" piece is large enough to accommodate the vest pattern.
- Trim the quilt down to fit the pattern.
- Use the trimmed piece to measure for a lining.
- Sew the quilt and lining together.
- Embellish the vest with buttons and embroidery.
