More Fun Craft Products Carol Duvall Show : Episode CDS-1742 -- More Projects » By Carol Duvall
As always when showing "new" products on the show I must stress that though most of them are new at the time of finding them (usually at HIA/CHA, the big craft trade show) or having them find us...by the time the shows air, many months have often gone by. This has never deterred us from featuring products shows every now and then, because with the thousands of craft-related products on the market, there is no way that any one crafter could know about all of them--nor is there any way that any one store could have them all...so, undaunted, we show them, because old or new, they're often fun. Today's look at "new" products included the following:
The little light box from Artograph really attracted us. Named GloBox, it is a true carry-along for crafters on the go. The size (5" x 9") is perfect to carry along and yet the work space is large enough to do most any embossing that you might be working on at home or away. It works on battery or you can plug it in. The top has a storage compartment to hold your stencils and embossing tools, and when you turn the separator over, it has molded areas for your paint and painting supplies for coloring those embossed cards you just made. Perfect!
And would you believe there's something new in glue sticks! This one is not round but a rectangle. This way it gets into corners and applies glue neatly along straight edges as well. It is from Adhesive Tech.
And if that wasn't enough, there is something new in the masking tape world as well. From Henkel Consumer Adhesives Inc. is a tape they call Duck Painter's Tape. We had two colors to show, one blue and one lavender, and in each case their main claim to fame is that if you don't remove them within a relatively short period of time, they will not leave a sticky residue! If you have a large job or one that you must leave mid-completion and cannot get back to right away, these can be wonderful. The blue tape has a 14-day clean release and the lavender is good for a clean release up to 30 days.
We thought Xyron had thought of everything. First they had a cartridge you could use in their machine to laminate your papers without heat. Then they came up with an adhesive-backing cartridge, then a magnetic backing cartridge, then a small version of the adhesive-backing machine, but they weren't done yet. The latest is a disposable cardboard adhesive-backing machine, "Stickers On The Run." Make 'em for a party (each one comes equipped with 20 feet of the adhesive backing) then toss the machine away!
Sizzix, too, has captured the interest of crafters far and wide...especially those interested in paper crafts. Now they've added a converter to their basic die-cutting machine so that it is possible to emboss with one push of the handle. The converter instantly attaches to the machine almost by itself because it is highly magnetized. The embossing folder consists of a plastic folder that holds the brass stencil, the card to be embossed and, when the top is folded down, the negative of the stencil. Slide it under the pressing face, pull the handle down, remove the stencil and card, and it's done! Yes, it's that fast. And fun. They have a number of different stencils available and will no doubt be adding more.
Magnetic items seem to be popular in a number of different products. Making Memories has a new Magnetic Stamp Alphabet and a Magnetic Date stamp. Looking very much like the old-fashioned stamp with a flat base and a vertical handle (FIRST CLASS MAIL, URGENT!, etc.). the flat base is magnetized as are the small (1/4-inch) letters and numbers so that they hold firmly together. Spell out your words and dates, etc., place the stamps on the base, they will stay in position while you ink them and stamp, then remove them and do something else. These were made with you scrapbookers in mind, of course. And card makers!
Midwest Products has a terrific new tool called Easy Cutter Ultimate that makes some cutting not only easy but accurate. The cutting head has a guide carved into the metal base so that you simply dial the degree of angle you want to cut, place the piece of wood in position, and cut. Perfect! I don't know the limitations as to the thickness and hardness of the wood, but the pieces I put in were bass wood...one was 1/4-inch thick and the other was 1/2-inch thick. They cut like butter. For folks who need to cut mitered corners for making frames and the like, this would be fabulous.
Flying Needles Tacky Bob was the name of the next product...with the letters spelling BOB standing for Box of Beads. The container was a small plastic box about 4 inches square and only about 1/2- or 3/4-inch thick. Open it up and each side (top and bottom) held a square of foam topped with a very tacky surface. We spread each surface with seed beads and they didn't move! A long beading needle was held in place with a narrow magnetic strip along the inside edge. You could bead in a hurricane and I don't think those beads would roll around. For beaders on the go, this would be great. We also added a Brandess-Aetna Boxhandle Magnifier to carry along. It is small and portable and can stand on its own.
And last of all an item that I almost couldn't believe...from Crop In Style is the P3 meaning Pop Up/Paper/Plus Storage tote. It has wheels and a handle and travels along with you like a piece of luggage, but when you stop and unzip all the zippers it reveals a stack of "shelves" that hold a lifetime supply of paper, or so it seems. The top layer features a solid flat surface that can be used as a work surface if necessary. Even if you don't travel with your supplies, this seems to be a great way to store them when you are at home. You can then just roll the P3 around to where you will be crafting.
