Great Craft Products Carol Duvall Show : Episode CDS-1753 -- More Projects » By Carol Duvall
This was an enjoyable segment to put together because there was no categorizing involved, just a mix of interesting products...some new, some not so new.
First item on the table was Texture Magic from Delta. Products similar to Texture Magic have been around in the craft business from time to time under different names, and for a long time in our hardware and home improvement stores known as modeling or spackling compound, but they have always been white. Deltas newest version comes in a variety of colors that can be used as-is or mixed with one another to give a variety of effects. Mix them just a little bit and get marbleizing, or mix them a lot and get even more colors and shades. There are a variety of ways in which they can be used as well; with a stencil and some Texture Magic, you can decorate walls, boxes, photo frames, paper, scrapbook pages, etc., all in dimensional accents.
And if you love to make your own paper from junk mail but have never dared use it in your scrapbooking because of the acidity in most of it, here comes make-your-own-paper guru Arnold Grummer to the rescue. Arnolds Paper Additive will take away that acid when you add it to the paper pulp. It doesnt affect botanicals if you toss them in too, but all of those other papers you mix up to make new ones will now be scrapbook safe.
Metal is in. It doesnt seem to make much difference whether you are talking about scrapbooking or jewelrymaking or cardmaking or whatever...a touch of metal, real or make-believe, is there--or should be. Even yarns have their touches of metal glitter. Now Riverwind has come out with a line called Etal Creative Materials. They look like sheets of metallic colored paper, but these are honest-to-goodness sheets of metal that you can treat like paper. You can cut them with scissors, punch them with a hand punch, or put them into your die-cut machine. You can rubber stamp on them. You can fold them. You can use them as you do paper but these are the real thing...no faux fooling They are very pretty and the colors are gorgeous!
ScrapWorks also has a bunch of metal in their line called Metal Alphadotz. These are small flat pieces of metal that are round and square in shape and have letters and numbers punched out of the center. They are actually like small stencils. They can be used as-is or placed over color chips then put in little color-coordinated frames that snap over the metal pieces. They are perfect for your scrapbook pages. Their metal clips work like paperclips; in fact, some look like very handsome paperclips. They are available in different shapes that add a touch of silver class to your cards and/or pages.
Next was an item from Simply Stamped that had a personal interest to us. A while ago a viewer sent us some samples of the incredibly tiny polymer clay canes that she makes, but they were not of circles and squares and stripes, etc. Her canes had little teddy bears and babies and dolls and the like in the center. Before we had an opportunity to show them to you, our very clever viewers work was snatched up by Simply Stamped, and they have her Designer Canes on the market! They are sold pre-baked. All you do is put them in the oven for five minutes and they soften up enough to slice. In addition to selling these Designer Canes, they have coordinating rubber stamps available so you can design some wonderful cards and scrapbook pages. For example, a stamp that makes a wavy line can be enhanced by adding several slices of the little fish cane. It looks like they are swimming in the waves! With very little effort, you have a very clever card in 3-D. Knitting and crocheting have become so popular again that it wouldnt be right to do a products segment without showing some of the different yarns now available. It used to be that it was only in your fine yarn shops that unusual or specialty yarns could be found, but now even your craft stores are carrying a wide variety. And the yarn companies are really expanding the look and texture in their yarns.
Lion Brand sent us two examples from their very expansive line named ColorWaves and Colorama. The ColorWaves changes color as you knit, but it is much more subtle and the colors are more beautifully blended than the variegated yarns we are used to. And for real fun, grab a pair of #10 needles and a skein of Colorama in the color tones of your preference and start knitting. Stay with it until you have used up the entire skein and you will have a 9-foot-long multicolored scarf consisting of one color block after another. No changing yarn, no knotting, no counting rows. It happens all by itself. What fun!
From Suss Designs come more wonderful yarns consisting not only of wonderful color combinations but wonderful yarn combinations. Rainbow consists of a thick mohair wrapped with a candy-colored cotton. It's a most unexpected combination that it knits up beautifully. Suss also has joined the passion for sparkle with a yarn named Sparkle. Soft cotton mixed with bright metallic silver or gold--it comes in black or white or wonderful colors that add to its glamour.
From Berrocco is a most unusual yarn called Suede, and thats exactly what it looks like in the skein. When you select a shade of light brown, you will almost believe that you are knitting with leather shoelaces! It comes in a variety of soft suede colors. Their Echo yarn, which they compare to T-shirt material, knits up into an interesting pattern, as is the trend these days.
And for a real attention-getter, Knit One, Crochet Two has just the package for you. It's their Pound Cake that comes in a variety of "flavors" as well as colors. The one I showed was Spiced Plum, and the yarns looked as good as the name sounded. Two patterns are included--one for a vest, one for a scarf--but with this wonderful selection of yarns and colors, you might want to knit up a bunch of squares just to look at them!
