Growing up with an artistic engineer for a father, Dale Merrill, of Des Moines, Iowa enjoyed watching his father sketch. Like father like son, evidently, since Dale quickly took to drawing himself. Once he was introduced to metal, he was inspired to add his creative touch to the medium.

Materials:

20-gauge stainless steel
3/16" steel rod
angel cut-out template
plasma cutter
welding equipment
welding safety equipment including helmet mask and fire-retardant gloves
black permanent marker
grinder
safety glasses
oxygen acetylene torch

Steps:

1. Trace the angel template on the stainless sheet material using a permanent marker.

2. Cut out the angel with a plasma cutter. Remove the slag with a grinder and polish to give some texture (figure A).

3. Attach the 3/16" x 30" ground stake by tack welding to the back of the angel.

4. Using a torch, apply low heat and flame to create a colorful patina (figure B).
