Sandi Genovese is a design wizard who works for a company that supplies cut-out images for schools and, most recently, for memory books. She puts together really animated memory book pages that have a 3-D feel because of simple folds and the way they are glued together. This would make a great shower gift or surprise birthday gift.

Pop-up Scrapbook Pages

Materials:

scrapbook or photo album
scrapbook pages
photographs
acid-free paper in assorted colors
acid-free adhesive - glue stick, photo tape
Ellison die cuts
stickers
press-on letters

Steps:

  1. Arrange photographs on the page as desired. Save a spot for the three-dimensional card (figure A).
  2. Crop the photos and mat with colored paper.
  3. Attach photos to the page with adhesive.
  4. Embellish page with stickers, small die-cut shapes or rubber-stamped designs.
  5. Use Ellison Cut-Outs to create the animated portion of the page.
To create your own 3-D card:
  1. 2-1/2" to hold the intended photograph. Fold in half and then diagonally to make guides. Re-fold to create the three-dimensional effect (figure B).
  2. Cut a contrasting colored cover for the card, slightly larger than the 3-D card, exposing a colored border all around. Fasten with double-stick adhesive or glue stick so that the colored border is visible evenly around the card (figure C).
  3. Decorate the cover with cut-outs, photographs, and lettering.
  4. Use a photocopy of the photo you intend to place on the inside tabs. Trim and fit the photocopy of your subject(s) for the tab (figure D). When you are comfortable with how the photocopy fits, use the photocopy as a guide for cutting the actual photo. Mount with adhesive.
  5. Use double-stick adhesive to attach the complete card to the scrapbook page (figure E).
Another Pop-up Card

Materials:

scrapbook
scrapbook pages
acid-free paper (assorted colors)
acid-free adhesive (glue stick, photo tape)
Ellison Cut-Outs
disposable camera or photos

Steps:

  1. Use Ellison Cut-Outs to decorate every third or fourth page. Secure the cut-outs to the pages with acid-free adhesive.
  2. To create animated pages, use cut-outs that are 3-D (i.e. pop-ups).
  3. If you already have photos for the book, use them to complete the decorated pages.
  4. If you don't have photos and are giving the camera as part of the gift, use Post-It notes to indicate photo placement.
To make your own pop-up card:
  1. Cut the paper 4 1/4" x 8" for the pop-up card. Fold in half and cut two 1" slits in the middle of the fold. Fold and pop out the tab.
  2. Cut a contrasting colored cover for the card, slightly larger than the 3-D card, exposing a colored border all around. Fasten with double-stick adhesive or glue stick so that the colored border is visible evenly around the card.
  3. Decorate the cover with cut-outs or photos.
  4. Cut subject out of photo and mount onto pop-up tab. Before gluing, test by closing the card to make certain your photo doesn't peek outside the card.
  5. If you don't have a photo, stick a Post-It note on the tab to indicate photo placement.
  6. Use double-stick adhesive to attach the completed card to the scrapbook page.
Hands Clapping Cards
  1. To create the hand card, use Ellison Hand Cut-Outs or trace and cut two hand outlines.
  2. For the shirt cuff, cut a strip of colored paper folded in half and attach each end to each hand.
  3. Cut a piece of paper (same color as hand) 4" x 4". Fold in half. Fold a small tab in the opposite direction on each end of the strip and attach these small folds to the bottom of each hand. This creates a pop-up tab for attaching the child's photo.
  4. If you don't have a photo, stick a Post-It note on the tab to indicate photo placement.
  5. Use double-stick tape to fasten the bottom hand to the scrapbook page.
