Heart Card & Glitter 101 Carol Duvall Show : Episode CDS-817 -- More Projects »
Guest Barbara Trombley demonstrates some basic techniques for decorating greeting cards and envelopes using glitter and glue. The Basics
Materials: In Toto art glittering system kit (includes glitter, adhesives, adhesive writing tips, cotton cloth, pearl pin, cardstock and Noodgers) 12 glitter trays heavy cardstock - recycled or gloss pointed spoon embossing powder thick line brush marker - medium gray from Art Glitter Institute envelopes - optional
Preparation - Remove the stop-flow disc from inside the spout on the glue.
- Pull off the tip cover to reveal the spout. Drop it on the metal tip, and push down twisting to the right. If the tip does not come off when gently tugged, it is attached correctly.
- Put the glitter in individual trays. Arrange the colors from left to right: red/pink, orange, gold/yellow, green, blue, and purple.
- Designate a drying area away from the work surface.
Decorating with Glitter - Set the cardstock on the table at an angle as if writing a letter.
- To protect the cardstock from sliding, touch and hold the upper/lower left corners of the card to the table.
- Hold the glue bottle like a pencil, touching the tip to the surface before squeezing.
- With the tip on the surface, add a slight amount of pressure to bottle until you get a small ball of adhesive on surface. Continue to apply slight pressure while gliding the tip across the paper, like writing with a ballpoint pen.
- At end of writing, stop motion, release pressure and twist or tilt the bottle up. Wipe the tip with a cotton fabric scrap.
- Hold the card and secure by fanning your fingers across back. Use your thumb for leverage on the front of the card. Be careful not to pinch because it will dent the surface of the cardstock.
- Spoon glitter onto the glue areas of the cardstock. Hold the card over the tray so excess glitter drops into same color tray.
- Tap off any excess glitter between applications.
- Allow one to four hours depending on type of paper, thickness of line, humidity, room temperature and air circulation for drying.
Heart Card
Materials: Holly Berry House Original Message Heart stamp with floral border - #8042 K In Toto Lace glittering system kit including transparent Ultrafine glitter in Hot Kiss, Melone, Lemone, Summer Sea, Nirvana, Amethyst, Crystal and Miss Muffet colors, Designer Dries clear adhesive with stainless writing tip, cotton cloth, Noodgers used to remove adhesive accidents, polyester lace, cardstock, adhesive-backed paper and stainless pearl pin to prevent glue tip from drying out black embossing powder from Art Glitter Institute embossing heat tool embossing pad pointed spoon tray for embossing powder scissors 1/8" double-sided tape
Steps: - Use Dries Clear adhesive unless working on an intense colored cardstock.
- Stamp the heart with an embossing pad on white cardstock, sprinkle on embossing powder and tap off.
- Heat the powder with the heat tool to melt the embossing powder.
- Glitter the leaves in Summer Sea green glitter, a few at a time.
- Dot the center of the large daisies with an adhesive and glitter Lemone yellow glitter. Fill the daisies petals last.
- Dot the center of the other flowers and glitter in a contrasting color from what the petals will be.
- Start with the darker colors first, glittering as you go. Glitter all same color flowers at same time.
- Glitter the bow sections with Miss Muffet glitter.
- Fill in the daisy petals with Crystal glitter and the lower wreath of heart.
- Add pink dots on wispy stamens.
- Let dry two hours before close cutting shape with scissors.
- Cut adhesive-backed paper the same size as front of cardstock. Peel off the backing and position the cutout sticky-side-up on the work surface.
- Place the heart cut out from step 11 on the center of the sticky paper.
- Position the delicate pattern lace heart over the entire sheet of sticky paper and heart shape. Use your fingers to smooth over the surface of the lace to firmly attach lace to the sticky paper.
- Spoon Hot Kiss glitter over the lace then thoroughly tap off the excess.
- Pull off the lace to reveal lace pattern.
- Fill in the remaining sticky pattern with Crystal glitter, then tap off the excess glitter on the back of the paper.
- To attach as a flap on the front of a card, put a thin line of adhesive along the top edge of the cardstock.
- Attach the glitter lace paper to the front of the card or let it overlap then secure it by folding it over and gluing it to the back of the card.
- Cut 1/8" off of the bottom front edge of the card with scissors, craft knife, paper cutter or decorative scissors.
- Add double-sided tape to the lower edge of the inside of the card and glitter on Hot Kiss glitter.
- Needs no sealant but may use a clear acrylic fixative if desire.
Vertical Rainbow Writing with Transparent Glitter - Write the name in adhesive.
- Hold the card by the left side and apply narrow strips of color vertically, starting with pink, tapping off between colors.
- Add an underscore or star and glitter.
- Allow one to four hours depending on type of paper, thickness of line, humidity, room temperature and air circulation for drying.
Horizontal Rainbow Writing with Opaque Glitter - Write the name in adhesive.
- Hold the card on left side by the top fold of the card closest to the glitter tray. Apply a long, narrow strip of red glitter, off the tip of the spoon, left to right. Tap off the excess glitter. Apply orange as well.
- Turn the card around, and apply purple the same way as the red, continuing with blue and green.
- Apply gold last because it is the easiest color to pollute.
- Add an underscore, heart or star and glitter.
- Allow one to four hours depending on type of paper, thickness of line, humidity, room temperature and air circulation for drying.
Glitter Tips - Use Designer adhesives on any surface suitable for stamping or embossing. Dries Clear adhesive dries clear and is used under either transparent or opaque glitter. Designer Dries white adhesive dries white and is used under transparent glitter only.
- Think of transparent glitter colors as the watercolors of glitter. Use Dries Clear adhesive to make sheer colors or Designer Dries white adhesive to make opaque colors.
- Think of opaque glitter as house paint. The color of the background will not show through these glitter colors. Use with Dries Clear adhesive only.
- The opaque glitter with Dries Clear adhesive may be used on any type of paper.
- Use white or pale pastel-colored cardstock when using Dries Clear adhesive.
- Use Designer Dries clear to make the glitter sheer or when you want the background to show through. For example, the clear glue will reveal rubber stamping, color of the paper, or marker colors.
- Use Designer Dries white adhesive to make snow, Santa's beard, fur, marshmallows, popcorn, white writing, etc. The white will block out rubber-stamped lines and all background color. Use it to make transparent glitter act like an opaque or to block out the color of darker papers.
- Work on folded cardstock.
- Glitter will slide straight down into the glitter tray. To keep colors crisp and to avoid color pollution, let each color return to the glitter tray by following the same path made when it was applied.
- When glittering, let the glitter fall off the tip of the spoon, like a waterfall, in narrow strips. Twisting the tip of the spoon controls the width of the glitter strip.
- Use a medium-gray, thick line brush marker to shadow glittered letters, etc.
