Figure A
Project designed by Sandi Genovese.

Diorama cards provide a quick and easy way to send a three-dimensional message. The card lies flat for mailing, but easily converts to 3-D in the hands of the recipient.

Diorama card

Materials:

die cuts - Ellison
black card stock
patterned paper - Paper Patch
X-Acto craft knife
tape
glue stick
red and yellow markers
stickers - Mrs. Grossman's
scissors
gold and silver metallic pens

Steps:

1. Die cut the diorama arch card in figure A from black card stock (figure B).

2. Line the inside back of the card with red paper (figure C).

3. Computer generate the birthday message and position it onto the red paper.

4. Use a silver pen and a ruler to create a border on the front of the card.

5. Shade balloon die cuts with a silver pen and fasten them in the right hand corner on the front of the card. Draw balloon strings with a silver pen.

6. Scatter brightly-colored confetti cut from sticker strips onto the front of the card (figure D).

7. Cut birthday candles from yellow paper and various other colors of paper. Cut the flames off of all the candles except for the yellow candles. Glue the remaining bases on top of the bases of the yellow candles.

8. Clump the candles in three groups and fasten each group together.

9. Cut slits in the tab portion of the diorama card.

10. Insert a small portion of the candle bases through the slits and use tape, fastened on the under side of the card tab, to hold them in place (figure E).

Pocket cards

Steps:

1. Cut a card from black card stock (figure F).

2. Create a pocket with red paper and a black and white polka dot mat (figure G).

3. Cut candles from multi-colored, patterned and gold paper. Embellish the gold candles with the base portion of the multi-colored candles. Attach the candles to the pocket so that the tips extend over the top of the pocket (figure H).

5. Fasten the bottom and side edges of the pocket to the front of the card, leaving room for a $20 bill to slide inside.

6. Use a gold metallic pen to add dots to the candles for sparkle.

7. Computer generate a "Happy Birthday" message and add it to the inside of the card (figure I).

8. Add two more candles inside the card.
