Materials:

various art papers (corrugated, rice, etc.)
various curtain or shower curtain clips
ribbon (optional)
curtain rods, wood dowels or bamboo rod
curtain rod brackets

Steps:

Corrugated Shade

  1. Purchase a roll of corrugated paper the length of the window plus 10 inches. Measure the window width and cut paper to size. Cut a 1/2-inch wood dowel to the window width plus three inches on either side, depending on where the rod brackets will be placed.
  2. Secure the top of the paper to the dowel using glue or staples (figure A). Be sure to roll the paper up and over the dowel so it's not seen. Hang the rod and paper on the rod brackets.
  3. Roll the paper about half way up the window toward you. Secure with a large paper clip or clamp. Drape decorative ribbon over both sides of the shade and tie under the roll of paper (figure B).

Clipped Shade

  1. Use all sorts of clips to hang paper shades from a rod--curtain clips with rings that slip onto a rod or shower curtain clips that hang on a rod. Also look for interesting clips in hardware and office supply stores.
  2. Cut rice or other stiff paper to the size of a window and attach to a rod with chosen clips.

Shower Curtain Hook Shade

  1. If the hooks do not have clips to hold the paper, punch evenly spaced holes along the top for the shower curtain hooks to slip through (figure C).
  2. If the paper is thin, fold over the top edge before punching holes and secure with glue if necessary.

Suspension Wire Curtain Holder

  1. Instead of a curtain rod, use suspension wires that come with clips to hold curtains (figure D). String between two wire clamp holders at the sides of the window and attach curtain.
