Figure A
Expert Alex Anderson answers quilt maker Barbara Brown's questions about thread.

With so many thread choices available, what type thread is recommended for quilters?

  • When piecing with 100-percent cotton fabric, Anderson recommends a fiber that matches the cotton such as 100-percent cotton fiber thread (figure A) as any other type of thread may tear a hole as it penetrates the fabric.

  • Avoid cotton thread with a polyester core as the cotton may break away over time and leave the polyester thread, which could possibly damage the quilt.

Figure B
What do the numbers on the thread mean?

  • The numbers refer to the weight of the thread.

  • The average sewing thread weight is 50.

  • When you see 50/3, the three refers to a three-ply thread (figure B).

  • The higher the number the thinner the thread.

  • For hand quilters, Anderson recommends a 40-weight thread.

  • For machine quilters (or machine applique), Anderson recommends a 60-weight thread.

What is mercerized thread?
Mercerized thread has a chemical finish that strengthens the thread and gives luster to the thread.

What is monofilament thread?
Monofilament thread is made out of nylon similar to fishing wire. It does not stand up well to ultraviolet sunlight, which could be of concern for quilts stitched with this type of thread.
