Quilting can be a hard lesson for kids to learn. Let's face it, quilting is not exactly a hobby most 10-year-olds enjoy doing! But quilting can teach your children how to use their imagination. In fact, many quilters will use their kids' help in picking out fabric and placing blocks. Here is an easy and fun way to get them more involved.
Steps:
- Pick some nice big leaves that have fallen off a tree and press them under books.
- Apply fusible webbing to the back of the chosen fabric.
- Once the leaves are flat, have your kids place them on the webbed side of the fabric and trace around them (figure A). Remember, the leaves do not have to be perfect.
- Next, have the kids cut out the traced leaves. Peel the fusible webbing off the back of the fabric and arrange the leaves on a piece of background fabric (figure B).
- Once the kids are happy with their design, iron the leaves to the background fabric (figure C). Most all children can learn the running stitch or buttonhole stitch, so take the time and teach them. Once they've mastered the stitch, give them two strands of embroidery floss and have the kids start sewing around the leaves. It's that easy!
