Figure A

Large block tips
Set a 12-inch block on the diagonal and add four corner triangles, creating a 17-inch block (figures A and B).

Framing a small block with strips is another quick way to produce large blocks.

Cutting bias squares
1. Layer two, eight-inch squares of fabric, right sides facing up, and cut in half diagonally (figure C).

2. Cut fabric into strips, measuring from previous diagonal cut (figure D).

3. Arrange pieces (and stitch them) using 1/4-inch seam allowances. Be sure to align the strips so the lower edge and one adjacent edge form straight lines (figure E).

4. Press the seams towards dark fabric (figure F).

5. Begin cutting at the lower left corner. Each bias square will require four cuts.

6. Make first and second cuts along side and top edges. Make these cuts 1/4 inch larger than correct size. Make third and fourth cuts along the remaining two sides so they align along the diagonal (figure G).

8. Trim the bias to the right size (figure H).

Creating curved sashing
1. Make templates (6" x 4") to create curved sashing. Cut templates in a curved line and label them A and B pieces.

2 Join templates A and B, right side together, (to make one of the various sashing units), pin ends and center, with piece A on top (figure I).

3. Add pins to ease curves together.
