During her research of quilt ephemera, Waldvogel discovered that many quilters would hold on to everything associated with their piece, including newspaper clippings detailing the pattern, scraps of leftover fabric and contest ribbons.
Quilt ephemera--the patterns, instructions and other paraphernalia associated with quilts and quilting--is a wonderful way to find out more about country quilts. Quilt historian Merikay Waldvogel shows some examples of quilt ephemera and shares how to preserve these pieces of history.
  • Make a photocopy of everything associated with the quilt.
  • Use museum-quality archival materials, such as notebook sleeves and non-acidic paper.
  • Store items in notebooks and keep them in an area that's temperature-contolled with low humidity.
