If you've considered setting up your own crafting business, learn from one crafter who successfully marketed her crafts, and note her secrets to success.
Kathy Capone started crafting in high school by painting baby clothes. She moved on to painting adult clothes and sold them in her sister's upscale clothing store in Florida. Capone and her sister, Kim, expanded their talents and business to designing and painting wood products - from colorful boxes and mirror frames to fish-shaped wine racks. Today, the pair have three sales reps promoting and selling Two Totally Cool & Co. colorful products across the United States.
Although Capone's success as a self-employer is motivating to crafters, owning your own business isn't always fun and profitable. Capone stresses several important lessons she learned along the way:
- Make sure you are capable of providing a great quantity of product to keep up with increasing demand.
- Have a variety of products in your craft line, not just one or two.
- Presentation can be the key to your success. Establish a theme and build upon it.
- Always use high quality photographs to show your products.
- If you need to hire a sales rep, look in the back of crafting magazines for listings of reputable and experienced personnel.
- Be prepared to cut back on your social activities. Running your own business is hard work.
