Quilters have been breaking traditional quilting rules since the dawn of quilting history. We visit internationally recognized quilt consultant and curator Julie Silber for a tour of unique antique quilts that broke the rules early.
Julie's business, The Quilt Complex, explores the history of quilts for private clients and museums. In this business, Julie says it's easy to appreciate quilts that are special for extra small stitching, expensive fabrics and complex techniques. She also takes a special joy in finding unusual quilts that broke all the rules. These quilts are not necessarily finely crafted, and they're usually utilitarian in nature. They often from the turn of the 20th century, and Julie's favorites tend to be traditional in thought but with a twist that makes them eccentric or quirky.
