Figure D
Project designed by Janet Hofacker.
Project demonstrated by Kellene Giloff.

Materials:

journal or art book with heavy pages
pictures from old art books or magazines, photographs, old documents and other paper items for collaging
brayer
small dimensional items for accents
rubber stamps
sponges
acrylic inks and paints
sandpaper
paintbrushes
metallic rub-ons
water-soluble crayons
Yes glue

Steps:

Ink Wash

1. Using a wet sea sponge and a mix of acrylic inks and water, cover the journal page with a sweeping motion to create a wash of color (figure A). Experiment with two or three colors in overlapping glazes, allowing each color to dry before covering it with another. Try applying the ink in a circular pattern or on the page borders only.

2. To dry, place wax paper between the ink-washed pages. Close the journal and place weights on it overnight to keep the pages from curling.

3. When completely dry, affix collage elements such as pictures, photos, and old papers (figure B) using Yes glue thinned to the consistency of thick cream. Leave an open space on page if wanting to write thoughts or poems (figure C). Roll a brayer over the affixed papers to smooth out any wrinkles or air bubbles.

4. If desired, use rubber stamps to stamp images on the pages or overlapping the collage papers (figure D).

Collage

1. Affix the papers and allow them to dry.

2. Gently pry up the corners of the papers and slowly rip them as far as they will tear. Experiment tearing with and against the grain of the paper. Don't worry about ruining the composition, as more collage elements can be added later.

Tip: When affixing your collage image to the page, do not glue the very outer edges. This makes it easier to grip and tear the paper.

Sanding

1. Sand the collage papers to make them appear worn and weather-beaten.

2. After the collage is completely dry, sand it lightly with different grades of sandpaper. Work slowly and sand in the same direction as the grain of the paper.

Adding color

1. Use crayons to color around the edges of torn art work then lightly apply water with a paintbrush to activate the watercolor.

2. Use metallic rub-ons or sponge more acrylic ink around the edges of the collage papers to enhance the composition.

Accessories

Affix small flat items such as antique coins, keys, charms, multi-colored thread, postage stamps and jewelry.
