Frog closures make fun alternative fasteners where you might normally use a button but they're offered in limited colors. To make your own frog closure in any desired color, try this idea.
Materials:
8" length of 3/8" braided cord
15" length of 3/8" braided cord
fabric glue
twist tie
Steps:
- To make half of the closure, tape each end of the 8" length of cord. Form the length of cord into a circle by placing the ends together and adhere using fabric glue. Once dry, form the circle of cord into a long loop.
- Pinch the long loop together forming a figure eight shape and bind it securely in the center using a twist tie. Cut off the excess ends of the twist tie.
- Fold one looped end of the figure eight toward the center at the twist tie, and secure it to the center using fabric glue. Note: You can stitch the closure together instead of gluing if desired.
- Fold the second looped end of the figure eight toward the center at the twist tie and secure it to the center using fabric glue. Don't overlap the two loops, just butt them together at the twist tie in the center. Set this piece aside.
- For the "button" half of the closure, tape each end of the 15" length of cord. Fold the cord in half and double knot the loose ends together to form a loop.
- Cut off the excess cord at the knot, gluing at the cut to stabilize the ends of the knot.
- Hold the loop at the knot and twist the loop at the center so it forms a figure eight with the knot at the bottom. Secure by gluing the cord onto itself where it crosses at the center.
- Holding the figure eight at the center with one finger, push the knot up to the center, forcing the sides of the bottom loop out in a bow-like fashion. Glue at the center to secure. Allow to dry.
- Button the knotted end of this half of the closure into one of the larger loops on the first half of the closure.
