Battenberg Bonnet

Materials:

18" round of fabric
Battenberg place mat
1/2 yard of 1/4" elastic
1-1/4 yards of 5/8" white satin ribbon

Steps:

1. If you're using a place mat, measure three inches up from the center fold and cut, slanting down toward the edges to create the neck of the bonnet (figure A ).

2. Fold the cut edge of the place mat under 1/4-inch, and press to the wrong side.

3. Fold this same edge under, again 1/2-inch, and press. Topstitch along the inside to form the casing.

4. To make a 0- to 3-month size bonnet, insert five inches of 1/4-inch elastic through the casing. For 3- to 6-month size, use six inches of the elastic (figure B).

5. Extend the elastic 1/2 inch beyond both ends of the bonnet casing, and topstitch the ends of the casing to secure the elastic. Trim any excess elastic.

6. Gather the bonnet by machine basting along the inside edge of the openwork. Adjust the gathers to equal 15 inches. Tie the gathering threads to secure the gathers.

7. Fold the 5/8-inch ribbon in half to find the center. Place the center of the ribbon on the top center of the gathers. Pin it in place.

8. The ribbon ends will extend beyond the bonnet. Topstitch along both edges of the ribbon.

9. Insert 12 inches of 1/4-inch elastic through the ribbon casing for a zero- to three-month size bonnet. (For a three- to six-month size bonnet, use 13 inches of 1/4-inch elastic.) Topstitch the ends of the casing to secure the elastic.

10. Make a one-inch loop in the ribbon at the end of the casing, and topstitch to finish the bonnet.

Battenberg Booties

Materials:

baby-size booties
1-1/2 yd. Battenberg lace
ribbon rose

Steps:

1. Stretch the ankle portion of the bootie as far as it will go.

2. Stitch the Battenberg lace onto the ankle part of the bootie.

3. Sew on the ribbon rose.

Battenberg Bib

Materials:

6" fabric and Battenberg lace doily
paper or cardboard
1-1/4 yd. double-fold bias tape
pin

Steps:

1. Draw a three-inch circle on a piece of paper or cardboard (can use a glass from cupboard to draw around), then use approximately 3/4 of that for the neck of the bib.

2. Fold the bias tape over the cut edge so that it is enclosed, and pin it until you can sew the tape ends together.

3. Starting at the end of the tape, fold it in half, then stitch together the open ends. Do this all the way around the bib. Cut the tape at both ends with a slight slant to keep it from fraying.

"Baby Sleeping" Door Hanger

Materials:

two 8" heart-shaped doilies
puff paint in color of choice
12" piece of 1/4" stain ribbon
fiberfill
ribbon roses

Steps:

1. Start sewing at the cleavage of the heart. Go around the edge of the inside tape until you get several inches from the end.

2. Stuff enough fiberfill inside the two pieces of fabric until it gets puffy, then finish sewing all the way around.

3. With the remaining pieces of ribbon, make two bows, and place them on front of the heart. Sew or glue on ribbon roses to your preference.

4. Write "Baby Sleeping," or other message of choice.

Wee Bow Headband

Materials:

3" square doily
1/8" ribbon
13" stretch lace

Steps:

1. Gather three-inch square doily and wrap a piece of thread around it tightly to hold the gather together.

2. Wrap ribbon around three fingers to create a bow. Wrap another piece of thread around center to make a bow. Place the ribbon on top of the gathered doily and stitch it on.

3. Form 13 inches of stretch lace into a circle. Overlap the edges and zigzag stitch over them.

4. Hot glue or hand-stitch the bow to the headband on top of the zigzagged seam.
