Throw Pillows

Sew Perfect : Episode SEW-101 -- More Projects »
Materials:
16-inch pillow form
3/4-yard floral or print fabric
1/2-yard solid fabric
cardboard
1-3/4 yard satin twist brush fringe
two size 60 buttons for covering

Steps:

  1. Cut pattern fabric into two 18" x 18" square. Cut solid fabric into one 18" x 18" square. The 18" x 18" dimensions allow for a two-inch seam allowance.
  2. Cut an 18" x 18" cardboard square.
  3. Using a straight edge and pencil, draw a diagonal line across the cardboard square, dividing it into two triangle-shaped halves. Draw a second diagonal line across the square, intersecting the first line and further dividing the square into four triangle shapes. Cut out the four triangle cardboard shapes.
  4. Using the cardboard triangle shapes as a guide, cut one print fabric square and the solid fabric square into four triangle shapes.
  5. Alternating prints and solids, pin four triangle shapes (cut in step 4) together to form a square shape.
  6. Sew triangles together. Press seams open and top stitch 1/4 inch from seam. This is the pillow front.
  7. Cut remaining square of 18" x 18" patterned fabric to dimensions of the reformed alternating fabric square. This is the pillow back. Set aside.
  8. Tape each cut end of satin twist cord to keep from unraveling. Pin cording around perimeter of pillow front, touching taped cord ends together.
  9. Cut a 3" x 3" piece of solid colored fabric swatch to be used for covering the cord ends. Press raw edges of the swatch under. Fold the swatch over both cord ends. Sew fabric and entire length of cording in place. For best results, use a zipper foot to stitch cording.
  10. Pin fringe on top of cording, following same seam line created in step 9. The fringe ends should touch together. Stitch fringe to pillow front.
  11. Place pillow back on flat surface, right side up. Position pillow front on top of the pillow back, right sides together. Pin in place.
  12. Using the trim seam on the pillow front as a guide, stitch the front and back of the pillow together. Leave a six inch opening for turning and stuffing the pillow. Hand-walk the fabric through the machine for two diagonal stitches, then turn to create sharp corners.
  13. Turn pillow right side out. Insert pillow form and fold raw edge under to match existing seam. Hand-stitch the pillow cover closed using a slipstitch technique. Pull thread through beeswax to make hand stitching more effective.
  14. Embellish front center of the pillow with a coordinating fabric-covered button.
