Covering Bar Stools

Sew Perfect : Episode SEW-325 -- More Projects »
Here is a quick, easy cover for old barstools.

Materials:

fabric
batting
fiberfill
string

Steps:

  1. Turn your barstool upside down on fabric and trace around the perimeter of the seat to create a pattern. Add 1-1/4 inch to the outline to allow for seams and padding and cut out the pattern you have just drawn.

  2. Cut out a top and a bottom for the barstool according to your pattern.

  3. With right side of the fabric down, center two layers of batting on the top cover of the barstool.

  4. Cut a piece of fabric three-inches wide and the length of the perimeter of the barstool seat. This is your boxing strip to give the seat cover a boxy shape. Sew piping or cording to each side of the boxing strip. Join the two ends of the boxing strip, and sew across them at a 5/8-inch seam. Trim any excess material.

  5. Clip around the edges of your circular boxing strip. This will make it easier to match up with a flat surface. Pin the boxing strip to the top of the cushion right sides together.

  6. Using a zipper foot, sew around the cushion, stitching right on top of the piping seam.

  7. Cut material for a ruffle twice the circumference of the cushion and 12-inches wide. Fold the ruffle in half, making it six inches wide, wrong sides together.

  8. Position a piece of string along the top of the ruffle. Using a regular foot, sew a long zigzag stitch over the string within the seam allowance.

  9. Place and pin the half of the ruffle to the boxing strip, right sides together. Pin the second ruffle half directly across from the first one.

  10. Gather the pleats of the ruffle by pulling the string. Once it fits around the cushion, pin the pleats and wrap the string around the pin. Do the same for the other side.

  11. Smooth out the gathers and make the pleats even, then baste the ruffle to the cushion.

  12. Stuff the ruffle inside of the cushion and pin the back piece to the boxing strip right sides together. Everything should be tucked inside.

  13. Sew along the ruffle stitching, leaving a six-inch opening.

  14. Turn the fabric right side out and stuff fiberfill into the cushion. Hand-stitch the opening shut.
