Project designed by Sheila Haynes Rauen.

Materials:

1/2 yard white silk - china silk or crepe de chine
Deka silk paints in desired colors - discontinued
Deka silk resists in black and clear with metal tip for applicator - discontinued
Arty's adjustable frame and pins for stretching silk
assorted paint brushes - soft watercolor or fabric painting brushes
quilt batting, muslin, and backing fabric for pillow
thread
fiberfill
sewing machine
pattern - child's drawing or other suitable design transferred onto tracing paper (figure A)
quilting gloves - optional
pencil
sewing pins

Steps:

1. Wash silk on delicate cycle or by hand with or mild detergent or shampoo to remove sizing. Iron while the fabric is still damp.

2. Stretch silk onto the frame. Silk should include an allowance of at least one inch all around the outside of the design area.

3. Place the pattern into position underneath the silk. Trace the pattern onto the silk lightly with a pencil.

4. Apply resist lines to the silk using an applicator bottle with a metal tip on the end (figure B). Allow resist to dry for one hour before painting.

5. Apply silk paints with paintbrushes (figure C). Allow paint to dry for 48 hours before heat-setting the paints. The silk may be removed from the frame as soon as it is dry.

6. Iron the backside of the painted silk to heat set the paints.

7. Rinse the silk in tap water to remove clear resist. Roll the fabric in a towel to remove excess moisture. Iron while still damp.

8. If desired, sew backing fabric to the painted silk at this point to create a simple pillow or continue with the instructions to make a quilted pillow.

9. Layer muslin, low-loft quilt batting, and the painted silk with the design facing upward. Pin the layers together.

10. Thread sewing machine then machine quilt around the design (figure D), or you may choose to quilt by hand.

11. Cut a piece of backing fabric to size.

12. Pin the prepared front and the backing of the pillow with right sides together (figure E).

13. Stitch around the pillow along the seam line, leaving an opening for turning and stuffing.

14. Turn right sides out (figure F). Stuff pillow firmly with fiberfill.

15. Hand stitch the opening closed.
