Potpourri Sachets
Circle Sachet
Materials:
organza
gauze or lace fabric
plate
rubber band
ribbon
Steps:
- Use a dinner plate to create a round sachet. Trace around the plate, making an outline on the fabric, and cut out the circle (figure A). If you want to make a bigger circle, add several inches to your pattern.
- Pink the outside of the circle.
- Lay the circle flat and place potpourri in the center.
- Gather the edges of the circle together, encasing the potpourri. Bind with a rubber band.
- Tie the ribbon around the sachet and clip off the rubber band.
Square Sachet
Another type of sachet is a little square bag that is completely sewn shut. To make this version, use fabric cut 7" x 11".
Steps:
- Fold the fabric in half.
- Sew the two sides of the sachet together with an overlock stitch.
- Put the potpourri in the sachet and pin the top edges together.
- Sew the top edge with an overlock stitch.
- Glue on embellishments if desired.
Wrapping for Oddball Gifts
Material:
scrap fabric
ribbon
Steps:
- Use a piece of scrap fabric to make a gift wrap "bag." Set the gift in the middle of the fabric and draw up the fabric to cover the gift. Allow fabric to hang over the gift at the top.
- Trim the fabric with pinking shears.
- Fold fabric right sides together, and sew a 1/2-inch seam allowance from the two side edges. Turn fabric right side out.
- Put the gift inside. Gather the top of the "bag" and tie a ribbon around it.
- Cut two-inch strips around the top for fringe embellishment, if desired.
Cookie Cutter Ornaments
Materials:
cookie cutters
craft paper
fiberfill
fabric paint
Steps:
- Make patterns by tracing around cookie cutters on kraft paper, adding 1/4 inch to the perimeter for seam allowances.
- Cut fabric pieces for the ornaments according to the pattern. Cut two for each ornament.
- Position two pattern pieces one on top of the other. Fold the ribbon in half and sandwich it between the fabric pieces, inside the seam allowances, to create a hanger.
- Leaving a one-inch opening, stitch the fabric with right-side out. Leave the seams exposed for a homespun look.
- Stuff the ornament with fiberfill and use a zipper foot to stitch the opening shut.
- Trim the seam allowances or use pinking shears if desired.
- Embellish with fabric paint or other items such as buttons and trim.
