Bias Skirt

Sew Perfect : Episode SEW-710 -- More Projects »
Bias skirts can be incredibly flattering on those with fit figures but aren't always so complementary on the rest of us. To make a bias skirt more forgiving for the fuller figure, add extra inches of ease in between the seam allowance lines of each panel of the skirt at a point 3-5/8 inch away from the waistline. Add four to eight inches of overall ease for a flattering bias cut skirt.

To make a bias cut skirt from a straight grain pattern, try this idea:

  • Position a ruler so it lines up perpendicular to the grain line mark on the patter. Draw a horizontal line across the grain line and mark it as the cross line.
  • On the right side of the grain line, center the ruler diagonally in between the intersection of the grain and cross lines. Using the ruler as a guide, draw a diagonal line and label it "bias." Repeat on left side of the grain line.
  • Align the bias line of the pattern with the bias of the fabric. Mark and cut pattern, adding ease inches if needed and an extra 1-1/2 inch seam allowance to each panel side. There is no need to add extra seam allowance at the waist or hem lines.
