The Writing On The Wall
Carol Duvall Show : Episode CDS-555 -- More Projects »
Materials:
foam alphabet stamp set
stamping or acrylic paints in colors that coordinate with room
sponges to dab paint on stamp
paper plate
scrap paper
scissors
level
chalk
low-tack masking tape
Steps:
- Stamp the quotation on scrap paper and cut around the individual stamped images to create paper patterns (figure A).
- Determine whether the stamped message will flow in a straight line or fall in a freeform manner.
- To make a straight line, use a level to mark the wall at the height where the words will be stamped. Extend the line as long as necessary to accommodate the quotation.
- Use a loop of low-tack masking tape to attach the patterns along the straight line, adjusting the spacing of each element as necessary.
- Ink each stamp with a sponge in the selected color (figure B).
- Remove the paper patterns one at a time, and stamp the letter in its place. Continue until all the elements have been stamped. To work efficiently, use one color at a time and one stamp at a time. In other words, stamp all the "E" letters first, then continue with another letter.
- For a freeform pattern, attach the paper patterns to the wall, adjusting the spacing of each element as necessary.
Tips:
- As an alternative to stamping a quotation in a straight or freeform line, stack the letters in a vertical manner. This may be more appropriate for a room if a simple corner accent is desired. A quote could also be stamped over collectibles or photographs.
- Keep a small bucket of water nearby for holding used stamps until cleanup is convenient. Clean paint from stamps with water and paper towels.
