Faberge-Inspired Jewelry Box

Helen Morris from The Stencil Library explains how to transfer the glamour of Faberge eggs onto a jewelry box (figure A).

Materials:

wooden box
paintbrushes
silk latex paint, lime green
jars of high-gloss acrylic glaze (hunter green, slate)
pencil
stencil film
craft knife
instant gold size
low-tack or masking tape
black concentrates acrylic paint
assortment of stencil brushes
talcum powder
paper towels
floral stencil (Cherry Blossom is The Stencil Library brand used here.)
dust mask
red powder glue
rose gold powder glue
pearly white powder glue
basket-weave stencil
copper-colored glue
gold transfer leaf
high-gloss acrylic varnish
adhesive-backed jewels or beads (optional)
decorative drawer knob (optional)

Steps:

  1. Paint a plain wooden box with lime green with silk latex paint. Allow to dry.

  2. Dab several dots of the slate and hunter green onto the top of the box, then squiggle the paintbrush around and mix the two colors (figure B).

  3. Stipple over that for a smoother finish (figure C).

  4. Trace the surface area of the box lid onto stencil film. Draw an egg shape in the center. If you cannot draw an egg freehand, you could stencil an egg from an overlay of assorted egg shapes and sizes.

  5. Put down a cutting board and cut out an egg shape with a craft knife to make a stencil. Be sure to pull the knife toward yourself. Keep the oval cutout portion because you will need it later.

  6. Stencil the egg onto another piece of stencil film, then cut out an egg that is 1/8 of an inch larger than the original.

  7. Apply gold size to the top of the box, then tape the template of the box lid into place with low-tack or masking tape. Stencil the egg shape with black acrylic paint and a soft stencil brush (figure D).

  8. When the stenciled surface is completely dry, lightly sprinkle talcum powder over it to prevent stickiness.

  9. Dab paint onto the bristles of the brush, then circle the brush vigorously onto a wad of paper towel to work the paint into the brush and dry the tips of the bristles.

  10. Position the floral stencil over the egg until you get the maximum number of flowers to appear inside the egg.

  11. Put on a dust mask.

  12. Using a paintbrush, apply red powder through the holes of the petals on the stencil (figure E).

  13. Add gold powder over the stems and buds and pearl white onto the flowers.

  14. Add rose gold powder for a glitzy look, then brush away excess powder with a clean stencil brush or a soft cloth (figure F).

  15. Tape the egg-shaped cutout that you saved over the black egg on the box (figure G).

  16. Place basket-weave stencil to the right of the egg shape to make a border surrounding the egg.

  17. Mix copper paint with gold powder and lightly brush that through the basket-weave stencil (figure H). Continue until the entire egg is surrounded with this pattern. Allow to dry--takes about five minutes.

  18. Lightly sprinkle basket-weave pattern with talcum powder.

  19. Tape down the border of the cutout around the oval shape, then apply copper glue around the outline of the egg (figure I).

  20. Apply gold transfer leaf around the edges of the egg (figure J). Brush it away with a stipple brush when you've completed the leafing.

  21. Apply high-gloss acrylic varnish.

  22. Place adhesive-backed jewels or beads on the design for a final touch. You could also attach a decorative drawer knob.

  23. Decorate under the lid and the back of the box in the same way if you prefer.
