Melanie Royals from Royal Design Studio demonstrates a motif known as collage-style stenciling that combines stenciled motifs with hot-glued dimensional items such as silk flowers and ribbon.
Materials:
hat box, mailbox or other item to decorate
stencils (Royal Design Studio brand was used on the show; she used small ribbon trellis and sweetheart ivy topiary)
acrylic paint
painters' tape
silk flowers and dry leaves
paintbrushes (Design Studio brand was used on the show.)
scissors
hot-glue gun
Steps:
- After choosing a motif and assembling stencils and paints to match silk flowers and foliage, begin stenciling a background element such as a trellis or a basket-weave design (a trellis was used on the show). Use a very dry brush and apply with a soft touch (figure A).
- Stencil in the background foliage (freeform style) in the desired pattern (figure B).
- Add handpainted touches with an artists' brush to connect leaves and flowers to the trellis (a long, thin brush is ideal).
- Thin paint with a little water before painting vines, and hold the brush straight up when painting (figure C).
- Remove flower heads and leaves from wire stems. Cut off excess stems if necessary.
- Hot glue into place (figure D).
