Project designed by Grace Taormina.
Materials:
ready-made scarf with no print
Rubber Stampede foam stamps
assorted fabrics
various widths of ribbons to coordinate or contrast with fabrics
iron-on fusible webbing
crafting ink
stamping paint
fabric paint or acrylic paint mixed with textile medium
wedge-shaped applicator sponges
paper plate
rotary scissors and clear ruler
assorted beads and buttons - optional
embroidery floss and silk ribbon - optional
Steps:
Stamping a ready-made scarf
1. On a ready-made scarf with no print, measure a two-inch border along both long sides of the material and mark it with tape (figure A).
2. Use the flat edge of a wedge-shaped sponge to dab fabric paint onto a foam animal print stamp.
3. Stamp along the border, allowing the stamp to slightly overlap the tape (figure B). Remove the tape and let the border dry.
4. Mask off the border with tape (figure C) and use the flat edge of a wedge-shaped sponge to load fabric paint onto a foam floral stamp.
5. Stamp the remaining interior of the scarf, allowing some of the stamped images to overlap the tape (figure D). Remove the tape (figure E).
Stamping and assembling a scarf
1. Cut vertically down the center of a 1-1/2-yard piece of 44-inch wide fabric.
2. Use the flat side of a wedge-shaped sponge to apply fabric paint to a foam floral stamp. Stamp the image in a random pattern onto the entire scarf (figure F). Let dry.
3. Cut a mask out of paper the exact shape of the stamped floral design and tape it over one of the stamped images on the fabric (figure G). Load a foam fern leaf stamp with fabric paint and stamp the image over the paper mask, allowing part of the fern leaf image to stamp onto the fabric around the mask (figure H). Lift the mask to reveal a floral image surrounded by a fern leaf (figure I). Continue this pattern on each floral image. Let dry.
4. Iron strips of fusible webbing onto the edges of the right half of the stamped side of the material (figure J). Remove the paper backing from the webbing strips and fold the left half of the material over. Match the edges together and iron (figure K).
