Project designed by Frankie Fioretti.

Materials:

mat board to fit inside shirt
prewashed natural color cotton T-shirt
Deka fabric paints
deeply etched solid and outline rubber stamps
assorted foam brushes
iron, heat gun or hair dryer
Deka colorless extender
washable stamp pad
1-1/2" to 2" wide masking tape
clean scrap paper
gloves - optional

Steps:

  1. Center mat board inside shirt and tape in place on the back of the board. Do not use corrugated cardboard.
  2. Mask out background design using masking tape. Tear tape if uneven edges are desired. Paint will not be applied where tape is positioned.
  3. Mix paint with colorless extender. Tip: It is best to create lighter colors for the background. Make paint colors lighter by mixing them with white.
  4. Apply thinned paint to taped design using a foam brush. Apply light, even coverage. Blend colors with fingers.
  5. Allow paint to dry. Drying time may be speeded up by using a heat gun or hair dryer. Once the paint is almost dry, remove the tape and press on medium setting with a piece of clean paper positioned between shirt and dry iron. The shirt should be completely dry before proceeding to the next step.
  6. Determine where to place rubber stamped images. Tip: To get an idea of what the finished shirt will look like, stamp on paper, cut out the images and place the cutouts on the shirt until you're happy with the design.
  7. Apply paints to rubber stamps in a patting motion using a foam brush. Select colors that are darker than the background color. Do not use extender in paints used for stamping. Blend the colors on the stamp if desired and stamp image. Clean brushes and stamps immediately after use. Tip: Excess paint should be cleaned off the stamp as needed, usually after two or three stampings. A cotton swab is an effective tool for wiping paint away from a problem area on the stamp.
  8. Allow paint to dry. Press with a dry, medium heat iron using scrap paper between the shirt and iron. Heat-set in dryer if desired. Wait one week before laundering the shirt.
