Host Renai Ellison shows how to make stencils that help create a whimsical carousel-themed printed fabric.

Materials:

fabric paints
craft knife
fabric yardage to print (100-percent cottons, silks and linens)
stencil brush
plastic sheets to create stencils
masking tape
a book of simple animal drawings to trace
pencil and scrap paper
plastic plates to hold paints for stippling

Steps:

  1. Trace the image onto a piece of tracing paper.

  2. Use heavy plastic sheets to cut out a series of stencils that overlap in sequence to build the final stenciled piece (figure A).

  3. Use a stencil brush to stipple gray fabric paint onto the horse-body stencil (figure B).

  4. Repeat the process, using silver paint for both the mane and tail of the horse (figure C).

  5. Again, repeat the process for the saddle, using a copper color for the saddle stencil.

  6. The final paint step is to stipple the pole. Blue is a good color choice for this.
