Project designed by Jennifer Ferguson.

Materials:

spare chair
primer
gesso artist primer
light/medium sandpaper
1/2" flat artist brush
1" flat artist brush
Stencilled Garden stencils:
- TSG142 - Penny's Poultry Gone Wild
- TSG127 - Wild Animal Print
- TSG128 - Leopard Print
- TSG109 - Roman Molding
Americana acrylic paint
natural sea sponge
fabric medium
Right-Step clear varnish

Steps:

  1. Remove old seat from chair and remove old fabric. Replace the cushion if necessary before reupholstering the seat.
  2. Strip or sand off any old paint or finishes. For best results, remove all finishing.
  3. After stripping and sanding, completely wipe chair to remove all dust and dirt.
  4. Paint on one to two coats of primer, allowing drying time between each coat.
  5. For an even base coat, apply one coat of gesso as a final primer.
  6. After selecting colors, paint different area of the chair with a base coat color. Allow base coat to dry.
  7. Use stencils, stencil brushes, and sea sponges to apply acrylic paint to chair as desired.
  8. After painting the chair, add several top coats of varnish to the wood.
  9. For the upholstery, select a heavyweight cotton, pre-washed fabric. If painting the fabric, add fabric medium to the acrylic paint as directed by the manufacturer before applying the paint. Use stencils to paint the fabric if desired. After painting is complete, heat set and spray a protective coating on the fabric.
  10. Stretch the fabric around the seat form. Using a staple gun, staple the fabric to the backside of the chair seat and reattach the seat to the chair.

Tips:
  • Check with local furniture refinishing company for a quote on commercially stripping old chairs. It might not be that expensive and could save time and effort in removing old paint and varnish from the chair.
  • Cut fabric large enough to turn edges under when recovering the chair seat.
  • Paint out color choices on a sheet of paper before applying them to the chair to make sure they complement one another.
