Crafting is moving into the computer age, and there are thousands of resources available to anyone with access to a computer and a modem. Jaclyn Easton, computer expert and host of the radio show Log On USA, suggests that interested crafters go to their local computer "superstore" to buy a basic computer system to get started.

Crafters should remember to be prepared for the costs -- a system that includes a computer, monitor, keyboard and printer runs between $1500 and $2500. To this basic setup, accessories like a scanner or digital camera can be added for a few hundred dollars more. A scanner allows you to house photos and graphics in the computer. A digital camera can instantly send a picture to anyone with a computer and modem, so with this technology, a fellow crafter across the country can receive your picture in only a few seconds. If the price tag for all of the equipment is looking large, remember the benefits. You have the ability to go online to find free patterns, craft show schedules, craft supplies at a discount, and best of all, communicate with other crafters to share ideas. Some companies even provide you with information about international products that may not be available at you local craft store.

Although most computers come with a built-in modem, you can also purchase an external unit that attaches to the computer. The modem acts as a telephone that connects your computer to another computer so that you can communicate online. Once you are prepared to link to the Internet, Jaclyn encourages you to visit the specialized crafting addresses listed below.
