Some dandy ideas came out of the Shoebox today, most of them from you.
First, a photograph of a lovely quilt wall hanging from Evelyn Royal of Tulsa, Okla. Referring to the shows we have done using fabric samples that come in wallpaper books, Evelyn wrote to tell us that she and her husband own a paint and wallpaper store. Whenever one of the books is out of date, her husband rips out all the fabric samples and brings them home to her. Evelyn washes them to remove any glue, then uses them to make "hexagons, flying geese and almost any kind of quilt (figure A)." That's a lot more ambitious than the pillow we made!
An interesting tip came from Eve Bacik of St. Clair Shores, Mich. Eve wrote,"X-ray film is good for templates for stenciling. Many hospitals or labs have over-exposed or under-exposed X-ray film, and they're no good. If you ask very nicely at the hospital or lab, they might give it to you." Apparently, Eve asks very nicely.
And from Helen Setzer came not only a nifty little idea, but a picture of a very cute little boy...her grandson. The picture was a studio portrait shot that was absolutely the smallest such picture I've ever seen. I asked around and discovered that this is what some of the in-store photo studios offer these days. Helen takes the pictures, puts them on small strips of cardboard, then puts a magnetic strip on the back and writes CREATED BY on the front next to the youngster's picture. These are the refrigerator magnets that she uses to hold her grandson's artwork to the refrigerator. Love it!
Not from a viewer, but from O-Lipfa, the company that makes many products for crafters and quilters, came another one of those long, five-inch wide see-through plastic rulers. This one is different. It has holes strategically placed in the plastic, and a handle with suction cups attached, so once you position it on the paper, it will not slip around (figure B). When you press down on the handle, pins poke through the holes and into whatever you are holding down to cut. It was made with quilters in mind. Fabrics can be stacked in a pile and then easily cut without the pieces slipping around. I'll remember it the next time I have a bunch of papers to cut, too.
