Crafting In Comfort

Carol Duvall Show : Episode CDS-457 -- More Projects »
Professional crafter Maria Nerius has been crafting for more than 15 years, often up to eight hours a day. While working every day, she found that certain tools and good habits can help make craft work more comfortable. We have all heard of the term ergonomics, especially when referring to computers and work-related environments. Ergonomics has made its way into the craft world and Marie relays some of her suggestions to help us craft with comfort.
  1. Work in a semi-circle. Try to have all your tools, such as scissors and pliers near you and arranged in a semi-circle so that they are within hands' reach. Place more "harmful" items like the glue gun, iron, and power tools on the outside of your semi-circle.
  2. Avoid unnecessary hand and wrist strain. Your hands are the most important tool you have. If you craft for more than an hour at a time, have arthritis or carpal tunnel, try wearing craft gloves and wrist bands which supply tremendous hand support.
  3. Use the right equipment. Tools with springs in them are also extremely helpful and put less strain on your hands and wrist. There are even glue guns available that are easier to operate than some of the traditional models.
